ABOUT
CMJ 022019 Headshot.JPG

Cody Matthew Johnson is a multi-media composer, music producer, audio director, and multi-instrumentalist whose irreverent, unapologetic, and fresh perspective on music blurs the boundaries of conventional media music.

Through fusing traditional musical styles and electronics with hard-hitting modern production, Cody has pushed his way to the forefront of the video game and film scoring industry all the while collaborating with some of rock music’s biggest upcoming acts.

Cody is a founder of Emperia Sound and Music, a full-service end-to-end audio solutions company for video games, interactive media, mixed realities, and immersive audio, and serves as the Emperia Sound and Music CEO, Audio Director, and Lead Composer. Emperia Sound and Music provides full-service audio for mobile games, independent and AAA titles, and immersive environments and is represented internationally. He is also an instrumental force behind the Game Audio Network Guild’s recent expansion and rebranding efforts in 2020 and serves as Communications Manager, Events Producer, and Membership Liaison, and Editor in Chief of the organization’s new “The Audio Source” digital magazine.

Before graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music in Composition Scoring for Visual Media, he began to work alongside critically acclaimed composers Jeff Rona (Far Cry 4, God of War III), Haim Mazar (The Iceman, I Am Wrath, Disney Parks), and Dave Holden (I Am Legend, Gears of War, The Dark Knight) composing additional music, producing, orchestrating, and mixing for TV, film, and video game projects. Cody is credited on dozens of films, TV series, video games, and documentaries like Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, TNT’s Claws, Sony Playstation’s Powers, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and his music is featured in over 1,000 episodes of syndicated television.

After years in the film, television, licensing, and producing industries, Cody began to find his way into the production of video game sound and music. Cody’s most recent contribution was for Capcom’s critically acclaimed sequel Devil May Cry 5 (2019) and

disturbingly hyper-realistic Resident Evil 2 (2019). Johnson first caught the attention of the video game industry with his remixes of classic Capcom and Marvel character theme songs for the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Ultimately, it was Johnson’s modern production techniques and experience with heavy metal, industrial, and electronic genres that led him to compose and produce the fully-immersive and interactive theme “Subhuman” for Devil May Cry 5. The song featured an instrumental collaboration with Deathcore pioneers Suicide Silence, vocals performed by Volumes frontman Michael Barr, a Los Angeles based metalcore band, and was mixed by legendary Grammy Award-nominated rock mixer Mark Needham (Imagine Dragons, The Killers).

Shortly after completing Devil May Cry 5, Cody was again tapped by Capcom to compose the end credits song “Saudade” for Resident Evil 2. Former Sick Puppies frontman and singer-songwriter Shim collaborated with Cody on the lyrics and vocals. “Saudade” featured a solo performance from Porno for Pyros guitarist Peter DiStephano (frequently tapped talent for Harry Gregson-Williams’ scores), drums by Elmo Lovano (JamCard, Miley Cyrus, Christina Perri, Skrillex), and mixed by Mark Needham. Set at the same time as the original Resident Evil 2 in 1998, the song’s grunge influence sets a certain nostalgia for those players returning to this game twenty years later. Directors Kazunori Kadoi and Yasuhiro Anpo appropriately named the song “Saudade” to perfectly capture that nostalgia, literally translating to “a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something” — a nod to the chorus lyric “Now it’s all gone. The pain of remembering.”

Additionally, Cody releases his own music, both instrumental and collaborations with artists, often inspired by his unique music direction and taste fusing industrial, metal/hardrock, electronic, and orchestral hybrid that is featured in his video game, film, and television scores. Released in 2018, Cody’s debut album Raid Ready is go-to music for locking sights, slaying demons, and crushing enemies. Featuring hard-hitting instruments, demonic 8 string guitars, and explosive anthemic rock songs, Raid Ready is the soundtrack to your gaming experience and has everything you need to log on and settle up.

In 2020, in collaboration with poet and writer Andrew Smithers, Cody released an album titled VANITAS: For Spoken Word and OrchestraVANITAS follows a narrative paralleling the futility of repairing the current state of affairs in the United States, acknowledging issues that plague our society, the collective efforts to rebuild after disastrous policies, natural disasters, and shootings (to name a few), and teetering on the precipice of change. “We’re animals complete with gnashing teeth, thumbs, bloodlust, and iPads. It just took cameras in our pockets to realize we were that bad.”
